Multi-criteria Decision Aid as an Approach for Sustainable Development Analysis and Implemention
In this thesis the question 'What is the potential role of multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) in supporting decision making in economic organisations and in public policy aiming at sustainability?' is answered theoretically based on both the concepts of sustainability and of decision aid, as well as empirically based on two case studies.

This analysis tests economic theories regarding their suitability to deal with the economy as a co-evolving system and finds them undercomlex.
Systems theory provides criteria for the complexity of any suitable theory of sustainability (and of economics). The theory of orientors is used to derive sustainability criteria for evolving systems. Applied to the economy, criteria and indicators for sustainable economies are suggested.

The physical trade balance of the European Union
The trade relations of the European Union are characterised by a substantial inequality with regard to the flows of natural resources.
This report takes first steps towards the elaboration of a physical trade balance for the EU-15.

Environmental Policy Instruments for Dematerialisation of the European Union

This paper deals with environmental policy instruments designed to reduce the material input of European economies. In line with sustainable development, these instruments need to allow for economic growth, while taking into account environmental and social considerations.

Sustainable Community Planning Beispiele aus Vancouver

The Vancouver Region is facing huge growth rates:  Sustainable community planning (SCP) shall solve the problems and limitations caused by Sprawl, the prevalent form of urban development in the region.
Planning approaches in the area are analysed via historical settlement's development, planning instruments and concepts of SCP. Experts' interviews illustrate the discourse. 3 case studies about urban development projects are analysed with criteria for SCP developed from the previous work.

Building Energy Scenarios for Eastern Styria (Austria) using Multi Criteria Mapping with the Inclusion of Participatory Methods.
In this thesis the potential of renewable energies in future energy scenarios in Eastern Styria (AUSTRIA) is being assessed. This is done by applying a multi-criteria analysis method, namely Multicriteria Mapping (MCM) in which a status quo analysis is performed and participatory techniques are used to develop scenarios and criteria as the basis of the final analysis performed at a later stage.

Quantification and analysis of the material dimension
of socio-economic systems
The study analyses the significance of material flows for socio-economic systems with respect to economic development and potential environmental impact. Further more it presents the compilation of a database on total (used and unused) primary material inputs, giving concrete evidence for the importance to account for TOTAL material flows.

Material Flow Analysis of the Hungarian Economy
The aim of this study is to assess the path of the Hungarian economy towards sustainable development. As indicators for ecological sustainability material flow based indicators are used and the results of the material flow analysis for the years 1993-1997 are presented.
